Stutter to Success: Unveiling Melbourne’s Newest Speechie

Hey everyone, I’m Brendan!

I’m the newest transplant to both Melbourne and DWSP! I recently made the move down South to escape the Brisbane heat and humidity (the reputation Melbourne has for its coffee and great food may have also played a part) and so far, I’m loving every minute of it.

Growing up, my mother was a Speech Pathologist, so obviously when I told her of my career ambitions… she talked me out of it. I went on to complete a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, but the love just wasn’t there, so I rebelled and went back to study Speech. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve been a Speechie for 5 years now… and mum eventually got over it.

When I was younger, I went to Speech to help with my developmental stutter. Add an ADHD neurotype and you’ve got yourself a party! These difficulties with my own budding communication played a massive role in my wanting to help others with their communication. Being able to see yourself in your clients to understand both what they’re going through and the pathway forward has been the most rewarding aspect of being a Speechie.

When I’m not in clinician mode, I’m probably hanging out with my 3 year old Spoodle, Bailey. We’re learning to use AAC buttons to communicate at the moment (the ‘treat’, ‘walk’ and ‘dinner’ buttons are really getting a workout). I have a creative side which I explore through sculpture and pottery, drawing, painting, and 3d modelling. I also don’t mind a bit of gaming, and growing up I was always told my obsession with all things Pokémon would never be relevant in life – working with kids, I beg to differ!

I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can and working closely together to make a real difference. Let’s go out there and kick some goals!
