Talking Time - Intergenerational Playgroup

Hosted by Dee Wardrop Speech Pathology, in conjunction with Little Sisters of the Poor – St Joseph’s Home Northcote

Welcome to our Talking Time Intergenerational Playgroup at Dee Wardrop Speech Pathology!

You’ve seen the magic of intergenerational programs on the ABC – now it’s your turn to be part of something special.

Our playgroup brings together young children, their caregivers, and older adults in a joyful, language-rich environment located in the heart of a local nursing care home. Designed and facilitated by a Speech Pathologist and an Early Childhood Teacher, this unique experience is focused on enhancing your child’s communication skills through connection, creativity, and community.

Sessions run from 9:30–11:00am on Thursdays during the school term and follow a gentle, flexible structure that includes:

  • Welcome Time – greet new and familiar faces

  • Song Time – support language through rhythm and repetition

  • Story Time – build attention, listening, and vocabulary

  • Snack Time – share a moment and a bite together

  • Craft & Play – indoor and outdoor activities designed to inspire curiosity, interaction, and fun

Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a snack for your child for morning tea. Tea and coffee are provided for adults.

What to Expect

Why Join an Intergenerational Playgroup?

By participating, your child will:

  • Grow their language and social skills in a natural, supportive setting

  • Enjoy positive, respectful interactions with older adults

  • Build empathy, confidence, and communication through play

  • Be guided by expert professionals in early language development

And our older adult friends benefit too—with joy, connection, and renewed purpose that only little voices and shared moments can bring.

  • Children aged 18 months–4 years and their parent/caregiver

  • No prior referral is needed—just an interest in building communication and community

Who Can Join?

We Can’t Wait to Meet You!

At Talking Time, we’re looking forward to getting to know you, expanding your child’s language, building warm relationships, and celebrating the beauty of shared time across generations.

  • PAYMENTS: Payment is final and will not be refunded if you’re unable to attend this session.  (This helps cover our running costs).

ILLNESS: Please don’t attend if you or your child is sick! We are mindful of the very vulnerable people in our community who attend this session.

If you or your child have been unwell in the last 24 hours we respectfully request you don’t attend. If we feel you’re unwell when you arrive, we will follow the directions of the nursing home and ask you to leave the session.

EXTRA KIDS: Babes in arms are always welcome at no extra charge.   However, we request you make a booking for a second sibling, and if you’re lucky enough to have 3 pre-schoolers, we’ll welcome the third at no cost (please contact our lovely reception team on 8376 6399 to register your third child).
