I’m Dee, the Clinical Director of Dee Wardrop Speech Pathology Services. I’m also a working Mum with two young kids, and like most people I know, I’m suddenly working from home (WFH). I’ve got a couple of big things on my mind right now – namely, how to support our therapists who can’t work (with schools being closed) and how on earth to ensure my kids learn something (anything!) during Term 2, 2020 whilst retaining my job.
My youngest son, Sam, started Prep this year and has only just begun his journey of learning to read. More than anything, I don’t want him to lose the skills and enthusiasm he’s built over his first term at school.
So… I’ve recruited Jaclyn (pictured here), one of our Speech Pathologists and trained literacy specialists, to run a program suitable for Prep students like Sam, and any other kids who would like to join us each day. Jaclyn normally works in our school-based programs, but obviously won’t be doing that this term – so the program she’s running will be priced only to cover our costs.
I know Jaclyn will run a fun and engaging program that Sam can do largely independently (or at least with some distant supervision from me). I still want to know about his learning though, so I’ve asked Jaclyn to run an evening session for parents to understand the materials she’s using – and also to provide the materials ahead of time so we can be ready for each session and Sam can get set up with what he needs each day.
We’re hopeful that school may return at some point this term, so the initial part of the program is planned to will run for 4 weeks – but Jaclyn will also develop extension materials for another 4 weeks beyond that if we need it. If you’re interested – click here for the details of the program we’ve come up with.
I’m not sure who is more excited about this program – Jaclyn, Sam or me! Hopefully it’s a solution to a lot of issues – it can help families with some fun and educational sessions, allow my therapists to continue the work they love – and most of all continue the literacy progress for our kids.
I really hope you’ll join us, and I look forward to seeing you online for the sessions.
